General Self-Management
Our general self-management course runs over 6 weeks, with an additional introductory session for everyone, the week befor the main course begins. This course is designed for anyone who has a long-term health condition of any kind, whether it be a physical or mental health condition. It is also valuable for those who are caring for someone with a long-term health condition, as it can also offer support for the carer’s own health and wellbeing. There are a wide range of topics covered, which include:
- Managing symptoms like pain and fatigue to improve how you feel
- Setting weekly realistic goals using Action Plans
- Problem solving and decision making skills
- Relaxation and distraction techniques
- Managing the difficult emotions that almost everyone experiences when living with a long-term health condition
New Beginnings for Mental Health
This free course runs over 7 weeks with one session each week of 2.5 hrs and can help support anyone over 18 who is living with depression/anxiety which is challenging their mental health. There is also a short introductory session for everyone before the full course begins, the following week.
The course includes:
- Tools to address many of the common symptoms experienced when living with mental health challenges
- Advice around healthy eating in relation to mood
- Techniques around relaxation and managing anxiety symptoms
- Tools to manage depression and improve our communication skills with our healthcare teams.
Our courses are free and are provided by your local NHS. They are run by volunteers and staff who have mental health challenges just like you. It doesn’t interfere with any treatment you are currently receiving as it complements other healthcare programmes.
Cancer- Thriving and Surviving
Are you living with or beyond a diagnosis of cancer? If you're struggling to manage the impact cancer is having, or has had, on your life, then our 6-week self-management course may help. The course is also valuable for anyone who is caring for a loved one, relative or close friend who is living with cancer. The focus is on sharing supportive tools and techniques together with others affected by cancer to learn effective ways to deal with some of the common issues and difficulties people experience.
Topics include:
- Managing changes to your body
- Living with uncertainty
- Dealing with difficult emotions
- Relationships with others
- Planning small, achievable goals
- Problem-solving skills
- Making decisions about treatments
Each session lasts for 2.5 hours with a scheduled break in the middle. There are 6 weekly sessions plus a short introductory session, for on-line courses only, the week beforehand. The course is led by staff and volunteers who have lived experience of the impact of a cancer diagnosis in their lives.
Self-Management support after Covid
This course runs for 12 short sessions over 6 weeks. The focus is on supporting those living with Post-Covid symptoms to improve and maintain their health and wellbeing whilst they work towards recovery.
Topics include:
- Dealing with difficult emotions likes stress and anxiety
- Managing fatigue and improving sleep
- Building confidence by setting weekly achievable goals
- Problem-solving tools to find solutions when we can't complete our goals
- Decision-making and communication skills
Workshops
We offer a variety of self-management workshops which include; Coping with Chronic Pain, Feeling Positive, Busting Stress, and Coping with Life using Relaxation amongst others. Each workshop runs for 1 to 2 hours and are currently taking place online. The dates and times of all our workshops can be found below.
